The Process of Creating Each Micro Landscape

At Micro Landscapes, every creation is a journey of artistry, precision, and passion. We bring cherished memories and iconic places to life through an intricate process that blends creative vision with unparalleled attention to detail. From the first visit to the final reveal, we ensure each piece is an accurate and breathtaking miniature replica, capturing the essence of your favorite landscapes.

Progress photo 1: measuring surface and mapping out area

Step 1: Mapping the Landscape

The journey begins with precision. Using exact measurements and grid systems, the scene is meticulously mapped onto the baseboard. Each feature is drawn to scale, ensuring accuracy. For example, the green of a golf course is carefully carved from plaster, laying the foundation for a flawless replica.

Step 2: Sculpting the Topography

Next, the terrain takes shape. Layers of material are expertly built up, sculpting the surface topography and seamlessly integrating the golf course green with the surrounding landscape.

Step 3: Building Up Layers

Foam, plaster, and other materials are added, carved, and shaped to recreate the natural contours of the original location. Every ridge, slope, and detail is crafted to perfection.

Progress photo 5: adding color and texture

Step 4: Applying Colors

With the topography complete, the landscape starts to come alive. A vibrant palette of greens, blues, and earthy tones is carefully layered to define water, grass, soil, and other foundational elements, bringing depth and dimension to the scene.

Step 5: Bringing the Scene to Life

Details make the difference. Sand traps, water features, layers of grass, and unique textures are added to breathe life into the miniature. This step emphasizes realism, ensuring every feature mirrors its real-world counterpart.

Step 6: Final Touches

The finishing touches complete the masterpiece. Handcrafted trees, bushes, and vegetation are meticulously added. Each tree is individually crafted using wire, foam flocking, and organic materials to achieve unparalleled lifelike detail.

The Art of Handcrafted Trees

Crafting trees is an art in itself. Each tree is built from scratch, capturing the natural beauty and individuality of the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big are the Micro Landscapes?

The size varies depending on the details and scope of each project. We work with clients to determine the ideal size for your space and vision. For instance, see portfolio example: Cave Point measures 22" by 27" and stands 16" high, roughly 1:160 scale.

For instance, see portfolio example: hole #12 at Augusta measures 14” by 27” and stands 16” high, roughly 1:160 scale.
How long does it take to create a Micro Landscape?

Due to our handcrafted process, the timeline depends on complexity. Most projects are completed within 4-6 weeks.

Are all Micro Landscapes custom made?

Yes, each Micro Landscape is entirely personalized and one-of-a-kind, crafted to reflect the unique features of your chosen location. For more details on how each custom landscape is built, visit our Process page.

Can you replicate landscapes other than golf courses?

Absolutely! While we specialize in golf replicas, we can recreate any landscape, from personal gardens to scenic landmarks. For example, see portfolio example: Cave Point, one of Sam’s favorite places to spend an afternoon.

How is this different from 3D printing?

Our Micro Landscapes are hand crafted to your specifications, not machine-generated. This process allows for greater attention to detail, higher quality, and a more personalized artistic touch, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

Can I request a specific moment to be captured in the landscape?

Yes! We specialize in creating memorable experiences, such as capturing the exact moment of a hole-in-one on a golf course or commemorating a special outdoor event.

Are these pieces suitable for both personal and business display?

Yes! Our Micro Landscapes make unique additions to homes, offices, golf clubs, and more, providing a distinctive and artistic touch to any setting.

These photos look lifelike, are they even more realistic in person?

Yes! Our photographer, Nick Hanson of Nick Hanson Photography, does a remarkable job, but the real impact is best appreciated in person.

How do I care for my Micro Landscape?

Like a true museum piece, we offer acrylic display cases or you can opt out and enjoy it more clearly.  A small layer of dust is the worst that can harm them over the years. With the acrylic dispay case, these landscapes can last up to a lifetime.  Keep in mind, they are fragile. Kids can’t help but touch them.

What materials are used in creating a Micro Landscape?

We prioritize sustainability in our process by avoiding harmful chemicals, excessive use of plastics, and Styrofoam. Instead, we focus on incorporating sustainable and organic materials wherever possible to create an environmentally friendly product.

I have pictures of a landscape that no longer exists. Are you able to recreate that?

We can absolutely work off a photograph to bring lost landscapes back to life.
